The Tsubame in Hakata Station

T

There is no better way to travel in Japan other than on a train, especially on the Shinkansen. I snap a photo of the Tsubame entering a Hakata Station as I was standing on a platform. I was travelling from Fukuoka to Kagoshima that day. It is a beautiful train which has been in service and operated by Kyushu Railway Company (JR Kyushu) on the Kyushu Shinkansen since 2004. It looks very different from other, the commonly seen JR Kyushu N700-8000 series trainsets. The word tsubame in Japanese means “swallow”, and has been used on a succession of limited express trains on the Tokaido and Sanyo Main Line in Japan since 1930. And those are some of the fun facts I found about it…

  • I couldn’t agree more. We visited Japan back in 2018 and couldn’t get over how efficient and fast the trains were. We sure could use a high speed train here in Canada!

  • I agree! Every larger country would benefit from Shinkansen technology. They are great for environment as well. The first Shinkansen service in Japan started running in 1964. They are expensive to build but you get decades of excellent service.
