I have visited Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park a couple of times in recent years and each time I was reminded how horrific the consequences would be for us if history repeats itself. This has been on my mind in recent days as threats are being made about the potential use of nuclear weapons again.

The Atomic Bomb Dome, previously the Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall, was designed by Czech architect Jan Letzl.

On August 6, 1945, the building was destroyed by dropping the world’s first atomic bomb. Because the pressure of the blast came from above, part of the wall escaped collapse.

Let’s hope this will never happen again, especially as today’s weapons are much more dangerous and powerful.
