
A Series of 20 black and white photographs from Gokayama in Japan is now featured in Artscape Gallery and you can view it online today.
It is on the UNESCO World Heritage List due to its traditional gasshō-zukuri houses, alongside nearby Shirakawa-gō in Gifu Prefecture. The region’s remote location is in the upper reaches of the Shōgawa river, which contributed to Gokayama’s lifestyle and culture. The village remained very traditional, with some of the houses being 300 years old. I visited it during early spring, with some snow still on the ground.
