Kaina of the Great Snow Sea is an original anime production from studio Polygon Pictures set in a post-apocalyptic dystopia. The story follows Kaina and Princess Liliha as they face a looming humanity’s demise on the Snow Sea, with the Canopy above providing an imaginative spin on the sci-fi genre. Impressive attention to detail in worldbuilding and the admirable use of CG animation make the series a riveting tale worth watching. Since it is a sci-fi series (my favourite kind of anime) I watched the first two episodes this weekend. The visuals, characters, and backgrounds are all recognizable, and the art design is the strongest part of the production. The characters of Ririha and Kaina are likeable, and the old villagers are sympathetic. However, the emotional side of the story is not fully developed, with Kaina and Liliha’s departure from the village feeling antiseptic. Despite this, the series is still in the ‘maybe’ pile of my watchlist. So time will tell.
