Junji Ito’s work is renowned for its ability to create iconic horror manga such as Tomie and Uzumaki. Netflix’s new anthology, Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre, captures some of his terror while adapting a number of Ito’s stories into animated episodes. Though the show manages to capture the essence of Ito’s work, the episodes are too short to fully express the dread that the original manga is known for.
Despite this, the show still features some of Ito’s signature body horror, and its visuals remain true to his distinctive style. It is hoped that the show will inspire viewers to read the originals and experience the full power of Junji Ito’s horror. I have read most of his mangas and I am looking forward to watching the anime on Netflix now.
