Rafael Viñoly, the world-renowned Uruguayan architect, has died aged 78. His son Román described him as a “visionary” whose designs featured in over 600 structures around the world, such as London’s ‘Walkie-Talkie’ skyscraper and the Tokyo International Forum.

He emigrated to the United States from Argentina due to the military junta and secured a teaching position at Harvard University before establishing his own practice in New York. He is survived by his wife, Diana, his son Román and stepsons, Nicolás and Lucas.
